How does polypropylene (pp) need to be modified for use in the automotive field?

Jan. 01, 70

Polypropylene (pp), commonly known as pleated rubber, is similar to white wax, transparent, light in weight, has good fluidity during injection molding, and has a water absorption of less than 0.02%. The shrinkage rate of PP is 1.0-3.5%, and the suitable thickness is 1.5-2.5mm. It is one of the five general-purpose plastics with large production volume, good formability, low price and widely used. However, the wide use of PP in the automotive field has two main problems: it is easy to burn (it will drip burning materials) and it is brittle in a low temperature environment. In response to these two questions, how should polypropylene (pp) be modified when used in the automotive field?

In order to allow polypropylene (pp) to be better used in the automotive field, the industry adds corresponding modified additives according to the actual application.

Flame retardant modification of polypropylene (pp) in the automotive field

For the high temperature and flammable environment around automobile engines, phosphorus-nitrogen flame retardants (intumescent flame retardants) are mainly added; when high polymers containing such flame retardants are heated, a uniform carbon foam can be formed on the surface The layer plays the role of heat insulation, oxygen insulation, smoke suppression, and prevents the occurrence of droplets, so it has good flame retardant properties.

Low-temperature modification of polypropylene (pp) in the automotive field

It is brittle in a low temperature environment and is mainly modified and toughened by adding other tough materials, rigid particles or elastomers, such as rubber (EPDM), talc (TD), glass fiber (GF), etc.

The application and trend of polypropylene (PP) in the automotive field

There are many automotive products made of PP resin, including various instrument panels, door guards, pillar guards, bumpers, water tanks, and decorative panels. The application of PP in automobiles has an increasing trend.
